Govt Reserves 15% Non-Gazetted Posts In JKP For Women

-

SRINAGAR:

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday announced 15 percent reservation for women in non-gazetted police posts.

The announcement about it was made by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday on the occasion of National Girl Child Day

“O n #NationalGirlChildDay, approved 15% reservation for women in non-gazetted posts of @ JmuKmrPolice. This is just the beginning. We are determined and committed to increase it further in future,” office of the J&K LG tweeted.

In another tweet, Sinha said his administration is committed to ensure ‘Nari Shaktis’ social and economic empowerment.

“For women and girls to be agents of change, J&K government is committed to ensure Nari Shaktis’ social and economic empowerment while redressing longstanding inequalities to build a more just and resilient society,” he said.

According to an official spokesperson, the step of 15 % reservation for women in JKP will give due representation to women in the Police force and will ensure the availability of sufficient women personnel to engage exclusively in the matter of gender-based crimes.

“The move will lay the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable society,” he said.

Despite several assurances before 2019, he said, the matter of reservation for women in J&K Police was never addressed.

“At present, without any exclusive reservation, women constitute 3% of the total strength of J&K Police and the numbers will increase after the reservation is implemented in future recruitments,” he added.

The government’s decision to grant 15% reservation to

women comes a day after the LG called for securing equal rights for every girl child and empowering them with opportunities.

“National Girl Child Day provides an opportunity to reiterate our commitment towards securing equal rights for every girl child, empowering them with opportunities for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable society,” Sinha said on Sunday.

“I salute the daughters of the nation for their accomplishments in various fields. They are also the backbone of our healthcare system fighting the global pandemic. It is our social and moral responsibility to bring change in the social perception, increase awareness on the importance of girls’ education, and their health and nutrition,” he added.

The National Girl Child Day is being observed on January 24 with an objective to generate awareness about the rights of girl child and spread the message on the importance of girl education, health and nutrition.
