Ways to comfort your partner to help them battle depression

Depression is a growing epidemic and can happen to anyone. It’s isolating and slowly impacts the relationsh­ips of the person who is suffering. To see your partner battling with depression can make you feel helpless, and as a well-wisher, you want to help him or her, but you might not know how to go about it. Here are a few ways in which you can care and support your suffering partner and try to pull the person out of it.

SET UP SMALL GOALS

For a person who is depressed, even getting up from the bed seems like a mammoth task. You can try to bring your partner back into doing the daily routine and make everything usual. Try appreciati­ng every positive step the person takes because this is the time the person needs motivation.

BE AROUND

While you may not be able to detect depression in its early stages, if at all you see your partner depressed about anything, make sure you are around. Give a warm hug or hold the hands tightly. The person suffering from it may not like it initially because a depressed person stays aloof from everything. But deep down the person will get a feeling that he or she is not alone during the testing times. Make your partner realise his/her self worth and that in your life through your love, and by expressing your feeling for them. While it may not cure depression but it can always be a tool in reducing it.
