NO PARKING FOR KARDASHIANS
UK-bred artist uses no parking signboards to make a statement about the media’s obsession with the celebrity family
Anti-Kardashian signs that read ‘No Kardashian Parking Anytime’ have been put up in several areas of Hollywood, in Los Angeles (LA), USA.
The idea came from a street artist, who goes by the name Plastic Jesus.
The seven official-looking signs were stuck to street poles featuring official parking signs. They were posted in areas around Hollywood — near The Ivy restaurant, outside the Urban Outfitters on Melrose and outside Cecconi’s West Hollywood eating house, also on Melrose. There is also one sign installed outside the Kardashians’ boutique, Dash. “I suppose it’s a protest against the obsession with the Kardashians and every kind of move they make,” the artist said.
“Their lunch outings and shopping trips are media events in themselves. What can be fascinating about someone pumping gas?” he said, adding, “People are shutting out real news content.”
The UK-bred artist said that the idea struck him when he saw paparazzi surrounding one of the Kardashian sisters on an LA street. “I guarantee that the number of paparazzi was far greater than any number of photographers chasing real news,” he said.
He further added, “The Kardashian family has become ingrained in our culture. We’ve allowed mainstream media to become so profit-driven, we are sacrificing genuine news stories to satiate our vapid celebrity obsessions.”
Prior to the sign, the artist was also responsible for another stunt.
Last year, he installed an oversized, heroin-injecting Oscar-like statue near the site of the 2014 Academy Awards as his response to Hollywood’s drug problem.
