LOCAL RESIDENTS INFORMED POLICE AFTER THEY SAW THE BODY OF THE 17-YEAR-OLD GIRL ON PUSHTA ROAD LAST WEEK

GHAZIABAD: The police on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old man for the alleged murder of a 17-year-old girl, whose body was found dumped in the trenches near the Pushta Road in Kanawani on April 14.

The police said that the girl was found to be pregnant during the autopsy and it allegedly led the suspect to murder her.

The police identified the suspect as Rahul Kumar Sarkar, who is a native of Champaran in Bihar and was known to the family members of the deceased. Presently, he was residing in Indirapuram.

The police added that the victim and the suspect were staying in a locality under the jurisdiction of the Indirapuram

police station. Local residents informed the police when they spotted the body of a girl on Pushta Road on April 14. The police later established the identity of the girl and informed her family members, who later protested in Indirapuram and alleged rape and murder.

The police registered an FIR for murder and launched an investigation. “Based on electronic surveillance and circumstantial evidence, we arrested the suspect from the jurisdiction of Indirapuram police station. During questioning, he said that the girl got pregnant and that is why he got rid of her,” said Abhay Kumar Mishra, circle officer (CO), Indirapuram police station.

The police said that the girl was in a relationship with the suspect for about the past six months and was pressing him for marriage and this led to the murder. They added that on the night of April 13, Sarkar took the girl to the scene of the crime and strangled her to death with her dupatta.

.“The provision of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act is generally not levied in the case of murder. However, we are taking legal opinion on this issue as the girl was a minor and was fourmonth pregnant. Suitable sections will be added during the investigation stage soon,” CO Mishra added.

The Indirapuram police had initially registered an FIR against three suspects on the basis of the complaint given by the family members of the deceased and later ruled out the involvement of two. The role of the third suspect was established and he was arrested on Saturday, added the police.
