Do not have land for new high court complex, MBPT tells HC
MUMBAI :The biggest landlord in Mumbai, Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT), on Friday told the Bombay high court (HC) that it has no land available for the construction of the new high court complex in the city.
An affidavit filed by the MBPT in the HC states that out of the total 799 hectares of land owned by MBPT, 275 hectares is already given on lease to a number of people and entities and the remaining 524 hectares is being used for infrastructural purposes. The affidavit further states that the MBPT’S land along the eastern waterfront, is affected by the coastal regulatory zone and 70% of it is designated as Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ-II) where only the industrial activity is permitted.
The state government has, in the meanwhile, offered 6.02 hectares of land out of the Government Colony at Bandra, where it proposed to develop the new HC complex which is a 12-storey structure. According to the affidavit, the government plans to provide a total constructed space of 25.93 lakh square feet for the new HC complex, including the main HC building with a built-up area of 15.54 lakh square feet. Separate space of 4.51 lakh square feet will be provided for the housing of the judges.
The affidavit adds that the total cost of the redevelopment of the Government Colony – 30.70 hectares out of a total of 37.75 hectares – and construction of the new HC complex will cost about ₹4,556 crore.
