Angry mob pours kerosene on cops, tries to set them on fire in Thane

irate mob of 20 people allegedly tried to set members of a police team on fire at Ambivli district on Friday.

The team, comprising an assistant police inspector, two sub-inspectors and seven constables, had gone to the village in search of a few people accused of chain snatching.

Senior police inspector GY Gore of the Khadakpada police said the locals poured kerosene on them and tried to burn them alive. The group then fled.

The Powai police arrested a man for allegedly trying to cheat his way into the Maharashtr­a police department by making his friend appear for the physical test, which is part of the the police constable recruitmen­t drive. His friend was also arrested.

According to the police, the accused, Ajit Choughale and Vinod Ingalkar, are from the same village in Sangli.

Both come from poor families and work in farms to earn a living.

As Choughale needed money, Ingalkar asked him to attend the gruelling exercise for the police recruitmen­t drive in his place.

About 100 marks are allotted for the physical test wherein an jump, pull-ups, and dips.

Accordingl­y, Choughale went for the physical test at the Andheri Marol police camp on Saturday morning.

At 10.30am, Choughale was stopped during the long jump competitio­n.

A police officer who was conducting the training was suspicious and asked Choughale to show him his identity card.

Choughale had pasted his photo over Ingalkar’s ID. The officer caught his bluff and detained him.

After the impersonat­ion and forgery was ascertaine­d, both were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and placed under arrest.
