COPS MUST STEP UP THEIR EFFORTS AGAINST NOISE POLLUTION

Residents who stay away from highways and main roads are lucky as they are not affected by the noise pollution of speeding trucks, cars, remodelled motor bikes all honking their horns to either frighten or to attract attention which is more near the colleges (Noise pollution: Do not honk, reduce health problems, March 8). The

RTO and the traffic police are trying their best to instil discipline among drivers, mostly of heavy trucks, which are fitted with musical horns. Moreover, the driver of the vehicles have no patience at the signals and start hooting the moment the signal turns green. The transport department must direct the manufactur­ers of vehicles to not fit noisy horns and instead they can go back to install bulb horns in trucks and dumpers among others. The traffic police should be given a ‘wire-cutting plier’ to cut the connecting wire to such horns and store them under the flyovers. This system was adopted in Chennai few years back.
