MUMBAI: A police informer driving a car died while his copassenger was injured, as the speeding car crashed into a gate at Malad on Tuesday.

The police suspect it to be a case of drink driving, as a bottle of wine was found in the mangled vehicle.

The incident took place when Salim Shaikh, a resident of Malwani, was travelling with one Nadeem in his car around 1am. The duo was heading towards Malad from Goregaon. The police said the damage caused to the car suggests Shaikh was driving at a very high speed. “We have recovered a bottle of wine with some alcohol in it,” said S Mahadik, senior inspector at Malad police station.

The duo was speeding on SV Road and reached Kaanchpada junction, when the car crashed into a gate. When asked if the men were drunk at the time of the accident, officials said they are awaiting the autopsy reports.

Passers-by pulled the two men out of the car and rushed them to a hospital in the vicinity.

At the time of going to press, Nadeem’s condition was critical.

The Malad police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence, rash driving and causing grievous hurt under sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The police have seized the vehicle.

An officer said the regional transport office will conduct further investigation to ascertain if the accident was a result of a mechanical
