Take ₹50k fine from those who waste water on Holi, BJP MLA tells BMC
MUMBAI: Taking note of the 20% water cut in the city and acute water shortage in Maharashtra, BJP MLA Ameet Satam has written to civic body to slap a fine of Rs50,000 on those who waste water on Holi, which will be celebrated on March 24.
Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has no direct control over private water tankers, it has promised to raise awareness against cutting trees and wasting water on Holi.
The BMC will not supply additional water on Holi day, as it used to till 2010.
“We will raise awareness about saving water However no provision to fine citizens or residential societies for misuse of water ” said a civic official
“The BMC’S health officer who issues licences to pri vate tankers under section 394 of Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, can act by not renewing the annual licences of the water tank owners,” said the official.
“I have written to the water department to come up with a circular to prevent misuse and wastage of water on Holi I have asked to impose a fine to the tune of Rs50,000,” said Ameet Satam.
After the city suffered a deficient monsoon last year the civic body decided to come up with a better plan to supply water to the city.
