Woman gets 6 years for killing live-in partner
MUMBAI: A city sessions court on Thursday convicted a 37-year-old woman and sentenced her to six years in jail for killing an assistant police inspector, whom she was living with.
The incident took place in April 2013. Nandkishore Taksalkar, Parvati and her 17-year-old son were living in Powai.
According to Parvati and her son’s statement, the couple used to quarrel regularly.
Taksalkar allegedly used to abuse and harass the woman. On the night of April 27, the couple had a quarrel, following which Parvati filed a non-cognisable complaint with the police.
The next day, Taksalkar entered the house in an inebriated state and passed out on the floor.
On seeing this, Parvati picked up a floor tile and hit Taksalkar. She then hit him with a hammer, leading to his death.
Parvati then surrendered at Powai police station.
Although she was charged under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, sessions judge DW Deshpande observed that the case fell under the ambit of the Section 304 (2) [culpable homicide not amounting to murder].
“The manner in which the incident took place, and the fact that the accused visited the police station after the incident and informed about it, demonstrates that the case would come under Section 304(2) of the IPC,” the judge observed.
Parvati watched the court proceedings from jail via videoconferencing.
She broke down when the judge pronounced his verdict, repeatedly saying that she killed Taksalkar because he used to abuse and harass her.
