Making a career in creative design

- Ashwini Kumar Prithviwasi letters@hindustantimes.com

Unknown to most of us, each one of us has a creative mind. In other words, all of us are born creative. It’s just that many of us don’t recognize this talent and are simply unaware of it only because we have never got a chance to bring it to the fore.

When choosing a career option, many students don’t even consider creative fields such as art, architecture and design because they think they do not have the aptitude for it. While it is true that some amount of aptitude is necessary for such fields, it is also true that learning how to create is not impossible. Just as we learn other subjects, these too can be learnt and gradually, the skill can be honed.

This is especially easier for those who can appreciate or critically analyse a form of art.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP

The first step, of course, is to zero down on the course of your choice and identify an institute. Following a good course from a decent institute, one can decide how to put that talent to good use, that is, which career path to choose. Some of the options to choose from are fine art, designer, art teacher, art curator, conservator, tattoo artist, graphic designer, forensic services, textile and clothing designer, and architect and interior decorator.

Basically, when you pursue fine art, you are preparing to become an artist, on who paints on canvas.

As a fine artist, person creates works that are appealing to the eye and the senses. The course can be expensive for the material required such as paints, brushes and canvases but sky is the limit for your imagination. It is very satisfying mentally and creatively for the person who has chosen it. Once established, it is also a lucrative career.

There i s vast scope f or a designer now-a-days. A designer too is a creative person and uses his/her aesthetic sense is a natural move from fine art because this too needs an aesthetic eye because this creation too needs to be appealing to the eye. Designers are needed in media houses, ad agencies, design collectives and publishing houses, etc.

IN DEMAND

An art teacher is always in demand. It is an immensely satisfying profession. Anyone who loves both art and children can consider becoming an art teacher in a school. Being an art teacher, you can impart all your knowledge and skills to children who want to be budding artists.

The profession of an art curator is an offbeat one for many and many students are not even aware about it. In this profession, not only are you able to curate your own work for exhibitions but also help other artists curate their work to showcase the best of their artworks.

All galleries and museums need an art conservator, especially since they always have some old works of art that need to be preserved. A sound knowledge of art is an added bonus.

WIDEN YOUR FIELD

It may sound unbelievable but those who make tattoo are also artists. They are also creative people with an eye for detail. A fine artist makes the inking of a body part that much more interesting.

A designer is different from a graphic designer. The elements such as tables, graphs, etc. that you see in a published article, a news item, visual, a book cover or a web page are all the work of a graphic designer. This gives published articles more appeal and also makes it easier for readers to get a grasp of the information.

An artist is an asset in crime investigation. Crime investigation agencies rely on a drawing and sketching expert to develop sketches of suspects, culprits or even victims from other peoples’ observations. To get the near accurate visual on paper is vital.

These are very good times for designing textiles and clothes. The profession is very lucrative if you are good at your job. Not only do you get a chance to give yourself a makeover, you also have the satisfaction of making others look beautiful, at a price!

Both the interior and exterior of a building is a work of art. This is one of the most visual reminders of what a good artist and designer can do because an artist cannot get a bigger canvas than a brick and mortar structure to showcase one’s work.

The career options are legion. Product design, photography, animation, craftwork, jewellery design, woodwork, landscape art, you name it and art and design go hand in hand in all these. It is up to you to choose what appeals the most to you.
