Jaipur civic bodies to have OBC woman mayor
JAIPUR: Six years down the lane, Jaipur will once again have women mayors. The post of mayor in the two Municipal Corporations in Jaipur namely Jaipur Greater and Jaipur Heritage will be reserved for a female OBC candidate as per a lottery conducted on Sunday.
The lottery for mayor and chairman of 196 municipal bodies was conducted at the directorate of local bodies. Officials of the local self government department, along with representatives of the political parties, were present at the lottery.
The state g o v e r n ment recently announced the bifurcation of the three municipal corporations of the state namely Kota, Jaipur and Jodhpur. Municipal Wards for the three corporations will be reconstituted and the municipal election will be carried out within six months, however, no date was declared. Jaipur Municipal Corporation was bifurcated into two corporations namely Jaipur Greater and Jaipur Heritage which will administer 150 and 100 municipal wards in the city, respectively.
First directly elected mayor in Jaipur city was Jyoti Khandelwal served from 2009 to 2013.
For Kota North Municipal Corporation, the post of mayor was reserved for SC women, however, for Kota South the seat was open for general.
For Jodhpur North and Jodhpur South municipal corporation, the seat for mayorial elections has been reserved for general women candidates, as per the lottery. Similarly for Ajmer Municipal Corporation, the mayor’s post has been reserved for SC women.
Seats for chairpersons and mayors of 30 municipal bodies were reserved for SC out of 196. In the Ajmer division, seats of four municipal bodies were reserved for SC, while in Jaipur division, six were reserved for SC candidates. Out of the six seats reserved for SC in Jaipur two were reserved for Sc woman.
In the Kota division, six seats were reserved for Sc out of which t wo were r e s e r v e d f o r SC women. In Udaipur division, five seats were reserved for STS out of which two in Kionad and Fatehgarh were reserved for ST woman.
