- Mukesh Mathrani htraj@hindustantimes.com

The Rajasthan police are at the receiving end while maintaining law and order in the state, suggest a couple of recent incidents. After a murder accused mocked the Sriganganagar police through his ‘Catch me if you can’ Facebook post recently, the Barmer police literally came under fire last week.

On Saturday, a police team from the district’s Dhorimanna police station, led by in-charge Suresh Saharan, raided a house in Sarono Ki Dhani following a tip-off about the presence of lanced poppy husk (LPH), a banned product.

Seeing the police, five people, including two women, present in the house escaped in an SUV. The police gave a chase but had to return empty-handed. A little later, nine men returned to the house and trained guns at the policemen. One of them opened fire, but the bullet did not hit anyone. After that the men fled from the scene.

Later, police found 53 kg LPH, locally called doda. However, the police filed an FIR in the matter only on Monday night. The police have been booked 10 people under different sections of the Indian Penal Code for rioting, armed with deadly weapon; voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty; assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and attempt to murder. The accused have been also charged with sections of the Arms Act and the NDPS Act.

Six of the accused have been identified as Prakash Saran, Swaroop Singh, Suresh Saran, Teja Ram, Pappu Kumar and Dama Ram.
