JAIPUR: A four-year-old boy was rescued from a 90-foot-deep borewell in Rajasthan’s Jalore district early Friday, police said.

The boy fell into the open borewell on Thursday at a village near Sanchore town.

“The boy was rescued around 2.30 am on Friday and taken to a hospital. His condition is stable; doctors are looking after him,” said Virendra Singh deputy SP, Sanchore.

According to district administration officials, the boy’s father had given a contract for digging up the borewell near their house.

On Thursday morning, the slipped into the deep pit while he was playing near it, and screamed for help.

The boy’s father and villagers rang up Sanchore police station, informing them about the incident. A few minutes later, the district administration alerted the state disaster response force (SDRF) for the help. A camera was lowered into the borewell to keep a check on the boy’s health, the officials said.

According to the rescue team, the boy was almost rescued on Thursday night using a makeshift machine that broke down in the middle of the operation when the boy had reached the mouth of the pit.

The local administration later brought experts from other parts of the state to help rescue the boy. Oxygen and water were given to the boy to help keep his vitals intact, the officials said.

The boy’s mother told the police that the borewell was covered with a construction plate which someone had accidentally removed. “His mother had asked him not to go near the borewell, but the boy forgot her advice and fell into the pit,” said an official.

“Her mother fell unconscious when she found that her son was stuck inside the borewell. We regularly sent food and water down the pit for the boy.”
