Positivity rate over 15% in 24 states: Govt
: Twelve states have over 100,000 active Covid-19 cases each at present, while the count is between 50,000 and 100,000 in seven, the Union health ministry said on Friday, as the country battles a second, more deadlier wave of the pandemic that has overwhelmed the health care sector in India.
India’s total Covid-19 active caseload reached 3,645,164, the highest it has ever been since the pandemic began, after it added 78,766 cases in a span of 24 hours.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Haryana and Bihar cumulatively account for over 81% of India’s total active cases.
One-fourth of total active cases concentrated in only 10 districts.
Bengaluru Urban, Pune, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Ernakulam, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kozhikode, Jaipur and Thane are the 10 districts that account for 25% of the total active cases in the country.
More worryingly, the positivity rate -- the percentage of tests that are positive -- is currently above 15% in 24 states in the country and in the range of 5-15% in nine, the ministry said.
It said Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh are among the states and Union territories showing continued plateauing or decrease in daily new Covid-19 cases.
However, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odisha are among those showing an upward trend in daily new cases of the infection, the ministry added.
Ten states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, account for nearly 72% of the new Covd-19 cases reported in a day. India saw a record 414,188 new coronavirus infections in the 24 hours to Friday pushing the total tally of Covid-19 cases to 21,491,598.
Besides, 3,915 deaths were reported in a span of 24 hours.
Ten states account for nearly 75% of the new deaths. Maha
rashtra saw the maximum casualties (853). Uttar Pradesh follows with 350 daily deaths.
The silver living, if any, is that cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 164.9 million.
Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh account for 66.84% of the cumulative doses given so far in the country.
The Health Ministry also asked the states to prioritise beneficiaries awaiting their second dose of Covid-19 vaccine, and ensure timely completion of the recommended vaccination schedule.
