DHANBAD : Following a written complaint by his wife, police on Tuesday arrested Aftab Ansari, a resident of Nichitpur, for allegedly pronouncing triple talaq despite mediation by the local panchayat between the couple.

This is the first such case in Dhanabd since the central government made pronouncement of instant triple talaq a criminal offence. Barora police station incharge Binod Kumar said, “Aftab has been arrested following a written complaint by the victim who has claimed that besides proclaiming triple talaq, her husband has also tortured her for dowry. The police has registered a case under relevant sections.

“Aftab was arrested on Monday night and produced before judicial magistrate on Tuesday, where he was remanded to judicial custody,” he added.

According to the victim’s complaint, on August 18 Aftab had pushed off Anisha from rooftop in an attempt to kill her following heated arguments. However, since she fell on a heap of sand she survived. The issue was taken to local panchayat for mediation.

Anisha in her petition claimed, that issue was settled but soon after mediation ended Aftab proclaimed triple talaq. Incidentally,

the couple solemnised a love marriage just three months ago. According to the complaint, her husband had been torturing her for two-wheeler and Rs 2 lakh cash. “we often had argument over the issue and Aftab often threatened to kill me,” claimed Anisha in her petition.
