RANCHI: The Ranchi police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for thefts in at least five houses where she worked as a maid over the past few months.

Sunita Kumari used to earn the faith of her employers after joining work and then steal the valuables of the house, police said.

The police have recovered gold and diamond jewellery -- 2 bangles, 3 gold rings, 2 diamond rings, 5 lockets, a gold chain and 8 earrings worth over `2.5 lakh from her.

The police took action after a deputy manager of Coal Mines Planning and Development Institute (CMPDI) lodged a first information report on August 12.

Two other residents of the CMPDI colony, Subrajit Das and Anindita Biswas, where the woman worked, also made similar complaints to the police.

The police said Sunita was also accused of stealing 2 gold bangles from a flat in Rajnigandha towers. However, the police were not able to arrest her for want of evidence.

She also stole `57,000 from the house of Madan Chaubey of Dhawan nagar. The victim had not lodged a case as Sunita was returning the money in instalments.

“The case shows that people are keeping domestic maid without proper verification. We are investigating whether the jewellers purchased the stolen items from Sunita knowing of her past. He could also be arrested,” said city superintendent of police Kishore Kaushal.
