Rahul blames Modi govt, BJP for dividing the society

ELECTION-READY Congress VP assures crowd of support and commitment to working for welfare of farmers and labourers, asks Samajwadi Party government to fulfil promises

- S Raju s.raju@hindustantimes.com Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has launched a mission to revive the party in the forthcoming UP Assembly elections.

MEERUT: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted the Modi government and the BJP during his kisan-mazdoor samvad padyatra in Saharanpur, blaming the party for dividing society.

He mocked the Modi government by saying that ‘Acche din nahi aye’ and now people are laughing at it. “Hame suit aur boot ki nahi, mazdoor aur kisano ki sarkar chahiye,” he said, adding that the present government at the Centre was for capitalists.

Gandhi, who began his padyatra from Pilkhani Industrial Area along with party leaders Madhusudan Mistry, Nirmal Khatri and Sri Prakash Jaiswal, was joined by thousands of people on the way. He held chaupals at Sikri Kalan and Sikri Khurd villages and also addressed a panchayat at Patni.

Reminding people the days of Congress regime, he said the party launched MNREGA scheme that helped labourers and farmers improve their living standard. He assured the gathering that his party will always support the cause of farmers and labourers and that he would continue to work for their welfare.

After giving people a patient hearing during his over 7-km padyatra, he criticised the ruling Samajwadi Party in the state. “The farmers are in trouble in the state. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav should take care of them and fulfill promises made to them,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, who arrived in Saharanpur on Monday afternoon, headed to Pilkahni Industrial Area where thou- sands of people had gathered to receive him.

He began his padyatra in a very enthusiastic atmosphere with people shouting ‘zindabad’ and other slogans.

It is believed that the Congress leader has launched his party’s mission 2017 to revive the party in the forthcoming Assembly election in the state.

The party’s success in Bihar Assembly elections has infused fresh vigour among its leaders and workers, who wish to regain their lost voter base in the state. NSUI’s success in CCS University and a few college student union elections in Meerut has also brought smiles back on faces of party workers and leaders.

Acche din nahi aye’(Good days have not come) and now people are laughing at it. Hame suit aur boot ki nahi, mazdoor aur kisano ki sarkar chahiye (We want a government for labourers and farmers, not for suit and boots)
