DHANBAD: The rush of patients is managed better at the Patliputra Medical Colle g e Hospital (PMCH) in Dhanbad than at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, said Veena Dhawan, additional commissioner of the Union health ministry, on Thursday.

The pat on the back for the PMCH came after Medical Council of India teams pulled up the hospital recently over lack of facilities. Improvement in infrastructure and filling of teachers’ posts at the medical college are still under the MCI scanner for the final go-ahead to its 100 MBBS seats.

Dhawan along with a team of experts inspected facilities and execution of National Health Mission (NHM) programmes at the hospital. The team expressed satisfaction over patients’ care at outpatient departments (OPDs). More than 1300 patients had turned out at OPDs when the team arrived for inspection.

“Patients here get better notice from doctors than at AIIMS. Patients start queuing up at OPDs in AIIMS from 3am but still many do not get appointment of doctors. Here (at PMCH) 1400 to 1500 patients are attended daily in OPDs,” Dhawan said.

The additional commissioner was impressed to find that 10 to 12 deliveries (four to five caesarean cases) are handled daily at the hospital, said Dr DP Bhadani, head of the surgery department at PMCH, who accompanied the team.

“This is the first time in 46 years of the medical college a central government health team has appreciated patients’ management at PMCH,” said Bhadani.

“The central team reviewed whether facilities at the labour room are available as per guidelines of the National Health Mission. Madam (Dhawan) directed us on how to keep newborn children and mothers safe,” said PMCH superintendent Dr Kameswer Biswas.
