FUEL PRICES ACROSS INDIA: WHO’S PAYING THE MOST?

The retail price of auto fuels increased on May 12 for the seventh time in the last nine days. According to Indian Oil Corporatio­n Limited (IOCL), the price of diesel has increased from ₹80.73 per litre on May 3 to ₹82.61 on May 12 in Delhi and the price of petrol has increased from ₹90.4 per litre on May 3 to ₹92.05 per litre on May 12. Here’s what the prices look like in different parts of India.

According to district-wise data on fuel prices from IOCL, the average price of petrol is highest largely in Madhya Pradesh, western and southern states and the lowest in northern and eastern states. Diesel prices also follow roughly the same trend, with some exceptions. Among 21 major states, Maharashtr­a and Karnataka had the third and sixth highest petrol prices, but only the 8th and 12th highest diesel prices. In Odisha, Chhattisga­rh and Gujarat on the other hand diesel prices were among the highest, but not petrol. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were the top two states in terms of both petrol and diesel prices, with the former ahead in petrol prices and the latter in diesel prices.

At the district level, the modal price (the most common price) of petrol was the highest in Anupur in Madhya Pradesh, where the fuel was sold for ₹103.21 per litre. Madhya Pradesh also accounted for 21 of the top 50 districts in terms of diesel prices. Of the other 29 districts, 14 were in Rajasthan, 7 in Odisha, 5 in Andhra Pradesh, and 3 in Chhattisga­rh.
