Despite dry weather, Kashmir gets no respite from the chill

SRINAGAR: The prevailing cold wave tightened its grip on Kashmir valley as most parts of the region registered sub-zero temperatur­e, in spite of the weather remaining dry for the second consecutiv­e day on Monday.

A meteorolog­ical department official said summer capital Srinagar recorded a minimum temperatur­e of minus 1.1° Celsius, against the previous night’s minus 3° Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 3° Celsius against the previous night’s minus 4° Celsius.

Ski resort Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.6° Celsius against the previous night’s minus 10.8 degree Celsius, Qazigund shivered at minus 3.9° Celsius, and Kokernag registered minus 5.5° Celsius.

MERCURY UP, YET HIMACHAL SHIVERS

SHIMLA: Despite an increase in minimum and maximum temperatur­es by 3-4°Celsius (C), the cold wave sweeping the region continued in Himachal Pradesh on Monday.

In Shimla, the sky was overcast throughout the day. The weatherman has forecast rain and snow in isolated places in high-altitude areas. Shimla meteorolog­ical centre director Manmohan Singh said western disturbanc­es over north Pakistan and neighbouri­ng had now shifted to J&K.

“Chances of snow were strong on Monday,” he said.

The minimum temperatur­e in Shimla was 5.1°C, while maximum temperatur­e was 13.6°C.

At Manali, minimum temperatur­e was 3°C and maximum was 10.2°C.

Dharamshal­a’s minimum temperatur­e was 6.2°C and maximum was 10.8°C. Chamba district’s Bharmaur town was the coldest at -12.1°C.
