Nuclear power plant evokes mixed response from locals
The foundation stone of the 2,800MW nuclear power plant was not laid without any show of resentment from the locals and farmers, as a large number of villagers registered protests against the plant inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Monday.
A large number of workers of the Indian National Lokdal (INLD), the Communist Party of India (M) and Bishnoi Jeev Raksha Sabha registered strong protests at various places across the district.
The agitators staged a dharna at Ambedkar Park in Fatehabad. People who attempted to wave black flags in the gathering were removed by the police.
In some villages like Dhangar and Kumharian, the villagers displayed the placards reading “PM go back”. Some farmers were whisked away by the police due to apprehension of demonstrations against the plant.
The PM, while addressing the gathering of farmers and other people on the occasion, said, “This power plant will be environmentfriendly and would cause no pollution. Half of the power generated here will be allocated to the state. It is the safest mode of power generation”
Allaying fears related to environmental degradation, Singh said, “This plant has been established after great deliberations about safety, ecology and water conservation, etc. Those people whose land has been acquired would be given compensation along with an annual royalty for 33 years.” Chief parliamentary secretary Prahalad Singh Gillankhera delivered vote of thanks to the PM. Governor Jagannath Pahadia, union minister for social justice and empowerment Kumari Seljawere also present on the occasion. HTC
