Putting smiles on faces of expectant moms
AGRA: When most private hospitals in Agra are refusing admission to pregnant women due to the scare of Covid-19, the District Women’s Hospital (Lady Lyall) is not only welcoming patients but also successfully delivering babies.
According to a senior hospital official, since the beginning of the lockdown on March 25, the hospital has delivered more than 1,000 babies. On April 25, the team conducted 84 normal deliveries and 68 Caesarean sections at the hospital, the official said.
Lady Lyall superintendent in-charge Kalyani Mishra said, “We have been trying to provide more and more help to those who are coming to hospital.” The team of medical experts is putting their entire efforts to put a smile on the faces of expectant mothers, she added.
“These days, 50% burden has increased due to most private hospitals closing and shifting of the maternity ward of SN Medical College to the District Women’s Hospital,” said Mishra.
She said, “We conduct about 15 caesarean sections and about 30 normal deliveries at the hospital daily. However, before the lockdown, there were just five to eight caesarean sections and 10-15 normal deliveries conducted.
“On April 25, doctors and health staff conducted 84 caesarean sections and 68 normal deliveries in a single day,” Mishra said. A doctor on duty said on conditions of anonymity, “We screen the patient and allow admission while following norms. After that doctors and paramedical staff do the delivery while wearing proper medical kits and taking care of the mother.
“The workload has increased a lot. But we work to provide relief to mothers and the newborn,” she added.
District Women Hospital has a capacity of 145 beds and has 13 duty doctors, nine paediatricians, three anaesthetists, 70 staff nurses and 60 fourth class staff to take care of patients in the hospital.
“Doctors are working in shifts and treating mothers and their newborns with utmost care,” said a hospital attendant.
