31,362 weapons seized in 2017

LUCKNOW:In 2017, police seized 31, 362 firearms, much more than in 2016, when 17,429 firearms were seized across the state.

The NCRB report released recently revealed that75 licensed weapons were recovered from ‘anti-national elements’ besides 6,618 unlicensed firearms. However, 2,860 licensed and 21,809 unlicensed weapons were seized from other people in the same year, said the report. In 2016, 16, 990 country-made guns and 439 licensed weapons were seized by the police.

As per the report, 58,880 incidents of rioting were reported across the country, of which the second-highest were reported from Uttar Pradesh (8,990). Similarly, 127 senior citizens were murdered in the state – thirdhighe­st in the country.

Uttar Pradesh topped the chart in cybercrime cases as more than 4,900 cases were registered in 2017, followed by Maharashtr­a and Karnataka. The report also highlighte­d the highest number of dowry deaths in UP at 2,524.

Uttar Pradesh reported 8,990 rioting cases, second highest after Bihar’s 11,698. The NCRB for the first time collected data on the circulatio­n of “false or fake news and rumours.” Under the category, Uttar Pradesh registered 32 cases, second highest after MP (138).

The state also topped the chart for cybercrime cases with 4971 cases (22.8%) which are higher than 2208 (2-15) and 2639 (2016).

The state also recorded highest number of cases for sharing sexually explicit content on the internet. The state-reported total 517 cases in 2017 of total 1768 cases reported across the country.

As many as 3,10,084 cases were registered under IPC, which is 10.1% of the country. UP is followed by Maharashtr­a (9.4%) and Madhya Pradesh (8.8%).
