BAHRAICH: Police on Sunday arrested former MLA Dilip Kumar Verma for allegedly thrashing tehsildar Madhusodan Arya and circle officer, Nanpara, Vijay Prakash Singh on Friday.

Verma was in the SP when he was MLA twice. At present he is in BJP. According to police officials, Dilip Verma, who is husband of BJP MLA from Nanpara Madhuri Verma, was produced before the judicial magistrate, who remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.

The former MLA told media persons while being taken to the magistrate court that he feared for his life, adding that all the cases registered against him were baseless. Verma was arrested on Saturday night by Jarwal Road police while he was fleeing to Lucknow. On being arrested, he immediately complained of having high blood pressure, in a bid to escape police custody. He was taken to a community health centre in Jarwal from where he was shifted to district hospital, Bahraich.

Verma was later taken to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow by police where doctors discharged him after a checkup as they found no ailment in him. He was then taken back to Bahraich and produced before the magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.

Superintendent of police (SP) Dr Gaurav Grover said Verma had beat up tehsildar

Madhusodan Arya in his office on November 16 and later thrashed circle officer, Nanpara Vijay Prakash Singh on Nanpara Kotwali premises in the presence of additional district magistrate and additional SP.

Grover said the former MLA also blocked the main road of Nanpara and created a ruckus in the market along with his supporters.

The SP said three cases, including the SC/ST Act, were registered against the former MLA.

The SP added that all Verma’s aides, who created a ruckus with him, were being identified and action would be taken against them soon.
