Spinners fashion UP’s second win

LUCKNOW: Left-arm spinners Shivam Sharma and Kritagya K Singh bowled superbly to help former champions Uttar Pradesh notch up their second win in as many as matches in the Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy one-day, defeating Maharashtr­a by 93 runs in Surat on Sunday.

Shivam took three for 39 in 10 overs, whereas Kritagya had three for 46 as Maharshtra got out for 162 in 39.5 overs while chasing 256 in 50 overs, at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium in their Elite Group match.

Both seamers Purnank Tyagi and Kunal Yadav too bowled well, bagging two wickets each as Maharashtr­a never got the going easy and were reduced to seven for three in the third over. Uttar Pradesh had 160-run win against Assam in the opening match on Saturday.

Middle-order batsman YS Dongre, who scored 86-ball 82 with the help of four boundaries and a five sixes, showed some might before the UP bowlers before being bowled by Kunal Yadav. Om Bhonsale (26) and AR Pore (11) were two other batsmen, who could reach the double figure mark.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh batsmen, especially skipper Aryan Sharma led from the front, hitting a fine half-century to help the side post 255/6 in 50 overs while batting first after winning the toss.

Aryan’s 68 came off 97 balls with the help of five fours and a six. He along with fellow opener Shivam Bansal (21, 30b, 4x4) added 54-run for the opening wicket. Harsh Tyagi (29, 43b, 4x4), Sameer Rizvi (38, 56b, 5x4) and Ankur Malik (29*, 25b, 4x4) were the other main run getters.

For Maharashtr­a, LG Sonawane remained the most successful bowler, bagging 3/33, whereas RS Hangargeka­r took two for 50. Now, Uttar Pradesh play their next match against Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.
