LUCKNOW The executives of the faculty forum of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) met Governor Ram Naik on Wednesday to apprise him about the issues related to increase in the superannuation age / re-employment of faculty at SGPGIMS.

Secretary, faculty forum Dr MS Ansari said, “The faculty members expressed their concern for proposal of increasing the age of superannuation from the existing 65 to 70 years. The proposal was floated without seeking the opinion of the general faculty, who are the major party affected . The underhand manner in which four faculty members, who are nearing retirement, have lobbied for this proposal with the government drew condemnation from all faculty members.”

“It is feared that such precedents will encourage arbitrary and ad hoc decision making and destroy the autonomy and academic framework of the Institute,” he said.

Dr Ansari said, “The justification letter to increase the age of superannuation sent to minister of medical education (dated.03.03.18), was cryptically signed by only 4 faculty members who are direct and immediate beneficiary to it.”

“We informed the governor that Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences has drawn parity with the rules of AIIMS, New Delhi, through the SGPGIMS Act and Resolutions and the age of superannuation at AIIMS, New Delhi is 65 years presently. The recent proposal seems to be contrary to the provisions of the SGPGIMS Act. However, the SGPGIMS Act already provides for contractual re-employment and should not be needlessly changed for benefitting a few faculty members,” he said .

The delegation informed the governor that all present faculty members unanimously agreed with the proposal of contractual re-employment of such faculty members after superannuation, as has been provided by the SGPGIMS Act and Resolutions.

It was further agreed that such a re-employment should only be entertained on need basis, with annual review and without any administrative posts and privileges.

The faculty members said that the governor was deeply concerned about the matter.

He assured that he will look into it personally.
