LUCKNOW: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has decided to get a ‘potency test’ conducted on BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused in the Unnao rape case, sources in the investigation agency said.

The test is likely to be conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS), Delhi.

The CBI had tried to get the test conducted at the King George Medical University (KGMU) and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) here but both the institutions expressed their inability to conduct the test as they had no facility for it, the sources said. According to the CBI sources, potency tests are conducted on rape accused in some cases.

“Potency test is conducted to ascertain whether the person facing rape charges is physically capable of committing rape or not,” said a senior CBI official.

“This test is also conducted to make sure that the rape accused does not plead in court during trial that he is impotent and cannot commit rape,” added the CBI official. As Sengar’s CBI custody remand ends on Friday, the federal agency is likely to approach the special CBI court, Lucknow, again to seek extension of his custody remand to get his potency

test conducted. The BJP MLA from Bangarmau, in Unnao district, was arrested by the central agency from his residence in Indira Nagar here on April 13 on charges of raping a 17-year-old girl. The rape incident allegedly took place in June last year at Makhi village in Bangramau.

The CBI has also arrested Atul Singh Sengar, younger brother of the MLA, who is facing charges of killing the rape victim’s father. With these arrests, the CBI has managed to get custodial remand of most of the persons associated with the Unnao incidents. Others arrested in the case are Virendra Singh alias ‘Babua’, Vineet, Shalu and Sonu Singh, all associates of the MLA.

The CBI has also arrested one Sashi Singh of Makhi village. The mother of the rape victim has accused Sashi of taking her daughter to the BJP MLA’s residence in Makhi village, where the girl was allegedly raped by the lawmaker.

Sashi is also accused of keeping a watch outside the room when the MLA was raping the girl.
