LUCKNOW: All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) president Shaista Amber has accused some clerics of misleading Muslims on triple talaq and the pending bill in the Rajya Sabha on the issue.

Shaista Amber has been spearheading a campaign against triple talaq. She was a party to the triple talaq case in the Supreme Court.

“Innocent Muslims, especially women, are being misled by ulema on the issue of triple talaq. Even the Supreme Court has ruled triple talaq illegal and void,” Amber said on Saturday.

On August 22 last year, the apex court had set aside the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims as void, illegal and unconstitutional. The court by 3-2 verdict held triple talaq was against the basic tenets of the Quran.

Now, a Bill criminalising triple talaq is pending in Rajya Sabha.

The Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017 has made instant triple talaq a criminal offence. The bill proposes a three-year prison term for a Muslim man who divorces his wife by triple talaq.

“Muslim women in large numbers are suffering due to triple talaq. But this fact has always been kept a secret by the ulema for reasons best known to them,” said Amber.

“All political parties must come together in the larger interest of Muslim women to ensure safe passage of the bill in Rajya Sabha that criminalises triple talaq and proposes a three-year jail term for those issuing divorce through this practice,” said Amber.

On March 18, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board had organised a convention at Tile Wali masjid in Lucknow against the Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017 that is pending in Rajya Sabha.

The convention was organised under the banner of Tahaffuz-e-Shariat Muhim.

Asma Zohra, president, women wing of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), demanded roll back of the bill against triple talaq pending in Rajya Sabha.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is organising a protest against the bill in major cities. The last demonstration will be held in New Delhi and its date is yet to be decided.
