Energy minister Shrikant Sharma and director general of police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh faced tough questions about effectiveness of the police from the family members of slain jewellers Megh Agarwal and Vikas Agarwal in Mathura on Wednesday.

The jewellers were shot dead in the Holi gate area of Mathura on Monday. No arrests have been made in the case so far.

While the minister said time was needed for improving the law and order situation that had been shattered in last the 15 years, the family members of the jewellers were unhappy.

“We are not going to get our family members back merely through attempts by the state government to improve the law and order situation in the state,” said an angry woman relative of one of the slain jewellers.

The family members of Vikas Agarwal said they had voted the party (BJP) to power but had lost everything under the regime.

They raised questions about availability of police. Others alleged that those injured in the Monday incident had to be transported on scooters for treatment because of the lack of police assistance.

Vikas Agarwal is survived by his wife Suhani, a son and twin daughters. His father Mohan Lal and mother Kusumlata are yet to come to terms with their elder son’s killing.

THE DGP ASSURED EARLY ARREST OF CRIMINALS AND URGED THE TRADERS NOT TO PANIC. HE ALSO ASSURED ACTION AGAINST THE ERRING COPS.

Sharma and Singh first visited the family of Megh Agarwal (32) at his in home Dampier Nagar, consoling his widow Kirti and others. Megh Agarwal is also survived by a three-year-old son.

The DGP and the minister also went to Nayati Hospital to meet the injured, including Vikas’s brother Mayank.

The DGP assured early arrest of criminals and urged the traders not to panic. He also assured action against the erring policemen.

“We are scanning the track record of police officials in the state and those with good one will be deputed so that they work with sensitivity. Local committees would be activated and more CCTV cameras would be installed for effective policing,” Singh said.

“Vigil would be enhanced in areas of state which are close to border of other states and community policing would be made effective,” he said after a meeting with police officials.

The DGP also said cops staying at one place for years together in violation of transfer policy would be removed soon.

Singh further said: “Those in police force have been asked to give details of their property and anybody found guilty of amassing assets disproportionate to their income would not only face action under laws against corruption but also be tried under criminal laws.”
