AUSU chief among 22 students arrested for violence near campus
The police arrested 22 students, including Allahabad University Students’ Union (AUSU) president Rohit Mishra, vice-president Adil Hamza, and others in separate raids here on Friday night in connection with arson and violence near the university campus.
Friday’s violence had erupted during a protest by students, demanding an inquiry into allegations of corruption at the university. The Colonelganj police registered an FIR against 2000 unnamed and 46 named students allegedly involved in Friday’s violence and arson.
Police are now trying to identify the students involved in the violence through CCTV footage, Colonelganj inspector Sacchidanand Tripathi said. He also said raids were being carried out to nab the students involved in the ruckus on Friday. All hostels of the Allahabad University wore a deserted look on Saturday as the inmates fled, fearing police action. Goods worth nearly Rs 50 lakh were destroyed in a fire at the Allahabad University auditorium late Friday night and early Saturday. The students had tried to torch the building after pouring kerosene through the window during the Friday violence. The fire was doused at that time, but flames spread inside the law faculty auditorium at night.
The security guard called fire tenders in the morning after he saw smoke billowing out of the premises. RK Chaubey, head of the university’s law department, said four air conditioners, a projector, furniture and other goods worth around 50 lakh were gutted.
