Literacy House to celebrate diamond jubilee
Education experts and activists from across the country will gather in the state capital to celebrate the diamond jubilee (60 years) of Literacy House, Lucknow from December 4 to 6. American activist, Wealthy Fisher, had established the institution in 1956 to liberate people from the shackles of illiteracy.
“The Indian Adult Education Association, New Delhi, in association with Literacy House will hold its 62nd ‘All India Adult Education Conference’ in the state capital from December 4-6. Governor Ram Naik will inaugurate the conference at Literacy House, Kanpur Road, Lucknow,” said G Pattanaik, president of the India Literacy Board.
Nehru and Tagore literacy awards will be presented during the celebrations and a diamond jubilee souvenir will also be released. Some of the sessions planned for the three days include: ‘Women literacy problems & prospects’ and ‘Literacy in the 21st century’. The institution educates adults, helping them learn through innovative methods like puppetry shows. Over the years, the organisation has evolved to where it imparts knowledge on legal, electoral and financial rights, and health and hygiene practices too. Programmes on digital learning, skill development are also organised.
Members of the board are planning to g encourage youth participation in its mission through activities like volunteering and sharing of ideas. “A live museum that showcases our work in an interactive manner is also on the cards,” said Pattanaik.
