PM showcases glowing ghats

- Pawan Dixit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a website in a bid to share with the rest of the country the makeover of Kashi’s famed ghats, which are now illuminated by LED lights.

The PM, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, has uploaded several pictures of the ghats glowing under LED lights in the late evening hours on www.narendramodi.in/varanasi-getsglowing. The LED bulbs are serving a twin purpose- illumination of ghats and saving electricity. The step has been taken under the national initiative of promoting LED-based efficient lightning.

After installation of LED bulbs at the ghats, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation’s power consumption at the ghats has come down to 135 kv from a whopping 488 kv.

This is no mean achievement in a state where snapping of power supply is a regular feature. Starting from the Assi ghat, the project will cover all 84 ghats of Kashi. Union energy minister Piyush Goyal had launched the project from the famous Assi ghat on June 8 by replacing conventional lights with LED bulbs.

The LED lights are part of PM Narendra Modi’s pet project- renovation of ghats.

It was from the Assi ghat that the PM had launched his Swacch Bharat campaign in his constituency on November 8 last year.

The Assi ghat has now got a new look. It is after almost 20 years that slit accumulated at Assi ghat by the Ganga has been cleaned.

It was from Modi’s constituency that the union energy ministry had launched the pilot project for distribution of LED bulbs to electricity consumers. Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a government of India enterprise, in collaboration with Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL) would make three LED bulbs available to consumers of the PVVNL in Varanasi.
