LUCKNOW: The five-day Durga Puja celebrations came to an end on Saturday with immersion of the Goddess’ idols in river Gomti here. Amidst the beating of dhaks and blowing of conch shell, all Durga idols of the state capital were immersed sans one.

In a departure from tradition, Bengali Club, which is celebrating 100 years of puja this year, decided to immerse its idol on Sunday. At least 100 dhakis will lead the immersion procession amidst blowing of conch shells.

Arun Banerjee, general secretary of the club, said, “An open invitation has been given to citizens of Lucknow to join us. Bus arrangements have been made to pick people from their respective colonies. There is a dress code too. Women will come wearing white saree with red border while men will be clad in kurta pyjama.”

DGP Anand Lal Banerjee will flag off the immersion procession from Hussainganj at 2 pm sharp.

The procession will pass through Vidhan Sabha Marg, Hazratganj crossing, KD Singh Babu stadium and then move to the banks of river Gomti opposite the arts college. Elaborate arrangements have been made for smooth passage of the procession.

“As it will not be a working day, there will not be much traffic on the roads. This will save inconvenience to the public. We want this momentous event to be a talking point in the state capital as no Durga puja in the city is as old as this,” said Banerjee.
