Some suggestions for prime minister

-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to usher in a new era of hope and prosperity for the people of India and also to provide development by good governance. He has also shown his willingness to listen to advice given from any quarter for the good of the nation. Keeping all this in view, I am giving the under-mentioned suggestions to him: RESTORE THE DIGNITY OF PARLIAMENT

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are the highest and the most sacred institutions of the nation. Prime Minister Modi has himself described them as “temples of democracy”. Yet, they are not allowed to function in an appropriate and dignified manner by their own members.

All of us are fully and sadly aware of the manner in which the proceedings of the houses are disrupted over one issue or the other, practically every day. The highest legislative institution of the nation, which also exercises control over the administration and safeguards the people’s liberties, is not allowed to do its very important job due to constant forced adjournments. Crores of taxpayers’ money goes down the drain. The governance of the whole nation is disturbed. This practice has to be stopped immediately if we hope to become a global power.

No disruptions occur in the parliaments of the G8 countries — the richest nations of the world. Parliaments of many of these nations have more members than ours. The prime minister should immediately

ALL OF US ARE FULLY AND SADLY AWARE OF THE MANNER IN WHICH THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE HOUSES ARE DISRUPTED OVER ONE ISSUE OR THE OTHER

address this problem and, with the help of the speaker, a code of conduct should be prepared which should be strictly followed by the members of both the houses.

Any defiance of it could make them lose the daily allowance of that day and continued defiance could mean even the loss of their seat in Parliament. Any delay in this would push the arrival of ‘acchhe din’ further away. THE PADMA AWARDS

Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan etc should be awarded to only those persons who are alive, like the Nobel prizes, which are not awarded posthumously. This would make the award more logical and would avoid controversies. RENAME ‘LAL QUILA’

Rename ‘ Lal Quila’ as ‘Subhash Quila’ or ‘Subhash Durg’ in honour of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose whose dream of the Tricolour on the Red Fort was realised nearly 67 years ago though he was not there to witness it. The writer is chief engineer (retired), UP Power Corporation Ltd, Lucknow.
