According to a recent performance appraisal survey conducted by Shine.com, a majority of employees who participated are not happy or satisfied with their appraisals this year. The survey points out that about 51% of the respondents did not get a hike this year, while 49% did, and about 19% got a hike of around 10% - which is the average figure this year.

Most employees believe that they have performed exceedingly well, but they haven’t received the kind of hikes they deserved, reveals the survey. Out of 63% respondents, 31% believe that they are star performers, and 16% claim to be sure about it as their bosses have told them that they are.

A majority of employees also ensure that they keep their bosses in the loop in terms of the workload they handle and the effort they put in. About 68% respondents say that they make sure they let their boss know of their achievements. Despite that, around 59% of the employees surveyed believe that the hike they have received is not justified and that they deserve more.

The reason for this, experts point out, is the fact that most employees and companies look at appraisals as a redundant annual ritual.

As Moorthy K Uppaluri, CEO, Randstad India, explains, “HR needs to change this kind of perception. Sadly, due to lack of awareness, managers have no idea how to effectively carry out a performance appraisal meeting or they simply lack the required skills to do so. HR needs to first improve management skills by providing an environment that is more favourable to the development of relationships between managers and staff, and this in turn could lead to a better appraisal session.”

About 51% respondents think that companies should have a single appraisal in a year, whereas 48% think there should be multiple appraisals in a year.
