Brij Bhushan booked for poll code violation

GONDA: A case for violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and prohibitor­y orders was filed against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker from Kaiserganj and former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Saturday, a senior official said.

According to district magistrate Neha Sharma, the BJP MP visited several villages in Katra assembly segment of his constituen­cy under Khargupur police station area with a convoy of about 25-30 vehicles on Friday without permission.

As a result, in-charge of the flying squad team of Katra market area, Dr Nazmul Islam, filed a case under relevant sections against Singh, Sharma said.

Sharma said restrictio­ns under section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure is in force in the district in view of the Lok Sabha elections and that the district administra­tion was committed to complying with the poll code.

Strict action will be taken if anyone violates it, the district magistrate said.

Police station in-charge Dinesh Singh said a case has been registered under relevant sections and the investigat­ion was handed over to sub-inspector Mrityunjay Singh.

The BJP is yet to declare its candidate for Kaiserganj seat.

Last year, the BJP leader made headlines after four elite wrestlers accused him of sexually harassing women wrestlers and also led sit-in protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar between January and May 2023.

After the Delhi Police filed a first informatio­n report in connection with the allegation­s, the case went before the city’s additional chief metropolit­an magistrate’s court, which is due to give its verdict on April 18.
