CID report on Jat stir out on social media; probe ordered

CHANDIGARH : As an intelligence report of the Haryana police criminal investigation department (CID) on the ongoing Jat dharnas made it to the social media, the agency chief on Monday ordered an inquiry into the leak.

Photo-images of two-page CID report on the ground situation at the dharna sites in nine villages across the state made rounds on WhatsApp in a group of newspersons.

The department chief, inspector general of police (IGP) Anil Kumar Rao, took a note of it, terming the leak as a “breach of system” and ordered an inquiry. He said though the information was not of ‘classified’ nature, action will be taken against whosoever had shared the reports meant only for a particular group of officials in the public domain.

The report that was sent by Rakesh Arya, senior superintendent of police, CID, Haryana, to all districts heads (except for Panchkula and Mewat), Railways police head and all the top CID officials, held that the Jat stir was likely to continue till February 19 and that Jat leaders were exhorting gathering to observe February 19 as ’martyr day’ as a tribute to all those killed during the Jat agitation last year.

The report held that there was a gathering of about 20,000 at Jassia (Rohtak), of about 12,000 at Joli (Sonepat), about 5,000 at Rasalwala (Jhajjar), about 4,000 at Ikkas (Jind), about 2,000 in Dadri and less than 1,000 each at dharna sites in Kaithal, Hisar, Bhiwani and Panipat.

Among other aspects pertaining to the Jat stir, the report pointedly said that Anurag Khatkar, president of opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Jind unit, had also threatened to rope in youths from educational institutes if Jats’ demands were not met. The report also held that given the swelling gatherings at some places, the possibility of miscreants mingling with protesters to disturb law and order situation could not be ruled out.

It may be recalled that last week only, an audio clip of a conversation between Hansi SDM Prashant Atkan and a top official in Chandigarh, pertaining to Jat stir had also made it to the social media, following which the SDM had gone on leave.
