Two months on, company fails to bring satisfactory results, says MC official
KAPURTHALA: It’s been two months since the solid waste management project was implemented here, but the company entrusted with the project work has ‘failed’ to bring satisfactory results so far.
The Jindal Urban Waste Management Jalandhar Limited (JUWMJL), which has been given the project work, has ‘failed’ to bring in proper equipment and bins for garbage collection as mentioned in the agreement.
According to the information provided by the company the Kapurthala town has around 15,000 households, while the company is, so far, covering 6,000 households only. The company has deployed 48 people, including 30 rickshaw pullers, 12 dump pickers and six supervisors, for the entire town.
Jugraj Singh, sanitary inspector, Kapurthala municipal council (MC), said the MC had lodged a complaint against the company, after which it improved the working and covered around 40% households. He added, “We have provided land to the com- pany for dumping the garbage, still they have failed to bring satisfactory results in the city.”
The issue has become a matter of concern as heaps of garbage can be seen lying on roadsides. Moreover, the dump pickers are also seen lifting the garbage manually, putting their lives at risk.
Meanwhile, Satish Kumar Sharma, project head, JUWMJL, said, “We have provided all the necessary things, including gloves and masks, for the security of the labourers and if they are not wearing the same, strict action will be taken against them.
He added, “The land provided for dumping the garbage does not have a proper link road due to which our project work is being suffered.”
