ROONEY GETS BAN FOR DRINKDRIVING
Former England soccer captain Wayne Rooney received a two-year driving ban on Monday after pleading guilty in a British court to drink-driving, the Press Association news agency reported. Rooney apologised for his “unforgivable lack of judgment” in a statement issued after he entered his guilty plea at Stockport Magistrates’ Court, near Manchester in northwest England. The 31-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Sept. 1 while driving over the prescribed alcohol limit in the northwestern county of Cheshire. Television footage showed him arriving at court on Monday wearing a dark suit. In addition to the two-year driving ban, Rooney was ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12month community order, the PA reported. “I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong,” Rooney said in a statement. Rooney announced in August he was retiring from national duty, ending a 14-year stint in which he became England’s top scorer with 53 goals.
Tensions simmer between Neymar, Cavani
Paris Saint-Germain kept their perfect start to the season going, but the 2-0 win over Lyon also laid bare certain tensions in their all-star front line. PSG were leading 1-0 at Parc des Princes when they won a penalty with 10 minutes remaining for a foul on Kylian Mbappe, making his home debut. Having already scored three times from the spot this season, Edinson Cavani assumed the responsibility would once again be his. Neymar tried to get the ball from the Uruguayan but it was Cavani who eventually took it. His effort was saved. “There needs to be a gentleman’s agreement on the pitch to decide who takes the penalties. We will sort things out internally for the next time,” coach Unai Emery admitted later.
My managerial career may be over: Redknapp
Harry Redknapp said there is “every chance” he will never manage another football club again after being sacked by Birmingham City on Saturday. The 70-year-old, who joined the Championship club in April and helped them to avoid relegation last season, was sacked after losing 3-1 to Preston North End at the weekend.
