POLICE CLARIFIED THAT IT WAS CASE OF BURGLARY AS NO RELIGIOUS STRUCTURE IN THE CHURCH WAS VANDALISED

NEW DELHI: Three days after a burglary was reported from a church in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar, the Delhi police claim to have apprehended the accused. Police arrested 42- year- old Sunny Suri, a resident of Tilak Nagar, for breaking into the church and stealing money from the church’s donation box.

Police claim Suri, an alcoholic and a drug addict, broke into the church on Saturday, May 23, with the intention to steal money. He was reportedly consuming alcohol outside the church on Saturday and decided to break into the church for money, taking advantage of the spate of church attacks being reported from across the city. Over fifteen teams, including a special investigating task force, were working on the case leading to Suri’s arrest.

The CCTV footage made available by the church also helped the police zero down on Suri. “Since the incident was reported late at night, there were no eye- witnesses. It was a blind case. We zeroed down on a lot of suspects during the investigations, but could not find any clue. However, local intelligence and CCTV footage helped us reach the accused,” police sources said.

Police also clarified that the church was not vandalised. It was a case of burglary. “The priest of the church had informed us that no religious structure was found damaged. Only the donation box was broken,” they added.

Meanwhile, the Delhi police is still investigating the case vandalism reported from Vasant Kunj on February 2.
