CARLY FIORINA IN US RACE

EX-HP CEO SEEKS GoP NOMINATION

- HT Correspondent letters@hindustantimes.com

The crowded field of Republicans running for the White House just got more crowded with former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and neurosurgeon Ben Carson jumping in on Monday.

Fiorina was the first off the block with her announcement on ABC’s Good Morning America, which she followed up with tweet a little later: “I am running for president.”

Carson, an African American, announced a few hours later telling supporters at a rally in Detroit: “I’m Ben Carson, and I’m a candidate for president of the United States.’

With these announcements the number of Republicans in the fray so far went up to five, with Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio already in and running.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush set up an exploratory committee last year, in a move clearly seen as the first step towards a fullfledged campaign. He is almost in.

There are reports that former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who has been in and out of a few earlier races, may be announcing on Tuesday. And then there are governors Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Bobby Jindal and John Kasich who have seemed keen, and could be announcing in coming days.

There is Donald Trump, or The Donald as he is also called, then. He has indicated he might be running, as he has several times in the past but has always pulled back.

Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and senator Bernie Sanders are the only two in the race from the Democratic party. A few announcements are expected.
