‘TV stars face a huge risk of being stereotyped’

Saumya Tandon says comedy shows are better than family soaps as actors can try varied roles

Actor Saumya Tandon (right) has been playing the lead role in a popular comedy show on TV for over two years now. Even after the second female lead, Shilpa Shinde, walked out of the show, Saumya’s popularity hasn’t been affected. The actor still continues to entertain the audience.

Asked if it gets monotonous playing similar characters for too long, Saumya says, “It’s definitely a challenge to do a daily show, more so, when you are doing a single show and you are playing that one character all the time.”

Saumya, however, adds that this problem is more in a drama show where an actor has to daily enact the same emotions and be in similar situations.

She also feels that when one plays a character for so many years, there’s a huge risk of getting stereotyped. “But that’s a problem that most of the actors face in today’s time. And it’s more with TV stars as a show keeps a character for so many years that the audience gets accustomed to seeing that person in that look and with the same name,” she says.

However, she says that there is a little respite in comedy shows. “In these shows, you keep changing looks and try varied characters, so you do get to explore lot many things. And the day I feel I am getting stagnant, I’ll say goodbye to the show,” says Saumya, who had earlier acted in the show, Aisa Des Hai Mera (2006).
