NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia on Friday informed the Delhi high court that students from other universities are coming to join an ongoing protest on the campus and, hence, they should be barred from 100 metres of the administrative block for safety purposes.

The submissions before justice Vibhu Bakhru come while hearing a plea filed by the university seeking directions to the students to restrain them from congregating, protesting, agitating or demonstrating within a radius of 100 metres of the administrative complex in the wake of recent protests by the students against the head of applied arts department.

On Friday, the Delhi Police informed the court that orders have already been given to the SHO of the area concerned and any toward incident would be prevented. Following this, the matter was listed again for February 21.

The plea by the varsity had contended that it has already taken action — such as sending the professor concerned on “forced leave”, constituting a fact finding committee, referring the complaint to the internal complaints committee (ICC).

However, despite that, students have been “vociferously” protesting against the vice-chancellor using public audio systems.

The petition had said recently, the V-C was locked in his office. She said the varsity is governed by certain rules and regulations and disciplinary action cannot be taken against the professor without a proper inquiry conducted in accordance with the rules.
