Anirban Lahiri suffers Presidents Cup meltdown
JERSEYCITY: Anirban Lahiri had an afternoon to forget as he and his International teammates were left humbled by the US who grabbed an 8-2 lead Friday in the Presidents Cup. Lahiri and partner Charl Schwartzel absorbed the worst beating as Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell administered a 6&5 thrashing to collect the first US point of the day.
The Internationals, mean- while, stumbled out of the starting blocks with Lahiri disqualified from playing the 3rd hole after taking a practice shot out of the bunker at the second. Players are allowed to practice putting after the holes have been determined but cannot practice shots from anywhere else on the course.
CHAWRASIA SLIPS
NEWCASTLE: SSP Chawrasia failed to capitalise on the advantages he earned in the 2nd round with a two-over 72 on Day 3 of the British Masters. Chawrasia had three bogeys in the last four holes and slipped from overnight tied-35th to tied-64th at one-under 209.
ATWAL MOVES UP
TAMSUI (CHINESE TAIPEI): Arjun Atwal hit a two-under 70 in Round 3, which helped him move into top-10 of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters. Atwal (73-71-70) is three-under and tied-8th, while Gaganjeet Bhullar (69) moved up to tied-10th.
PUNERI PALTAN WIN
CHENNAI: Puneri Paltan pipped UP Yoddha 34-33 in the Pro Kabaddi League on Saturday. UP Yoddha mounted a strong comeback in the last 10 minutes but fell short by a point. Deepak Hooda scored three super raids and ended with 16 points for Paltan.
HOCKEY TEAMS LOSE
PERTH: India-a women’s hockey team was handed a 0-7 defeat by New South Wales (NSW) at the 2017 Women’s Australian Hockey League here. The India-a men’s team too went down to New South Wales 0-1 in a closely fought encounter at the 2017 men’s Australian Hockey League.
PALLIKAL’S RUN ENDS
SAN FRANCISCO: Dipika Pallikal’s run at the Oracle Netsuite Open ended with a semi-final defeat at the hands of Malaysia’s eighttime world champ Nicol David. David, appearing in the final of this event for the first time, beat Pallikal 11-3, 11-0, 11-5.
