What are the prospects of a master’s in public health, master’s in health administration in India for non-medical graduates?
Deepshikha Prasad After BA economics, you can do master’s in hospital/ healthcare management.
This is a two- year, postgraduate diploma programme, available to graduates of all disciplines. The programme combines training in management skills, management principles, accounting and business communication, along with specialised knowledge on the working of a hospital, marketing of hospital services and logistics management.
You also get to know about basic healthcare and nutrition, prevention of communicable diseases, community health and other medical related services.
There are many institutes offering this programme, including Tata Institute of Social Services, Mumbai (www.tiss.edu), the Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration (www.apolloiha.ac.in), Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur, Bangalore and Dwarka, New Delhi (www.iihmt.org) and others.
If you are interested in disability studies, you can consider the MA social work in disability studies and action offered by Rehabilitation Council of India (www. rehabcouncil.nic.in) and Tata Institute of Social Studies (www.tiss.edu). Both are open to graduates from any discipline, although preference will be given to those applicants who have some experience in the field of disability. There is a written test and personal interview for admission.
