50% fare concession in govt buses for women in Punjab

CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday announced a 50% concession in fare to women travelling in all government-run buses.

Speaking during the debate on budget estimates, the chief minister said the state government will make all efforts to check monopoly and undue profiteeri­ng in the transport business. The announceme­nt comes after the government was criticised by the Aam Aadmi Party and some of its own legislator­s on the issue. He said 5,000 new minibus route permits would be given to the unemployed youth in next two years and another 2,000 route 5,000 new mini bus permits to be issued New mining policy on the cards

“We are committed to bringing a new state transport policy and the delay has happened as the matter was sub-judice.,” Amarinder

said. The chief minister assured the House that any transport permits found illegal would be cancelled, disclosing that show-cause notices had already been issued to 142, which were being examined as per law. The transport department was in the process of issuing 15-day showcause notices for the remaining 212 permits as well, said the CM, promising total transparen­cy in issuance of permits.

Amarinder also announced his government’s decision to deepen the ambulances network through 108. The number of ambulances will be increased from the existing 242 to 400 in two years, enabling 24X7 access to ambulance services for every cluster of 30-35 villages.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested Mohammad Shahrukh, ending an eight-day-long search for the man who aimed a gun at a policeman and then fired multiple shots at the crowd in Jafrabad last Monday, when the violence in north-east Delhi spiralled into a communal riot.

Police said the man, a college drop-out who runs a socks manufactur­ing unit in Usmanpur, was arrested in an early morning raid in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli.
