Karnal family held hostage in house, robbed of car, cash

KARNAL : As many as six masked robbers forced an entry into a businessma­n’s residence in Karnal’s Sector 9 and took away cash, jewellery and a car, after holding his family hostage at knifepoint, police said on Tuesday.

Police officials associated with the investigat­ion said that a former servant was among the robbers and it was he who provided the gang with all the details.

At the time of incident, complainan­t Jyoti Rao and her children were present in the house when the robbers barged in and held them hostage at knife point.

In the police complaint, Jyoti said the accused barged into her house on Tuesday afternoon and demanded she hand over the keys of the lockers.

She said they forced her to open the lockers and fled with cash and ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees, as well as their car, a Hyundai i20.

When informed, the police rushed to the spot along with a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team and began investigat­ion.

When contacted, Karnal DSP Virender Singh said the police have registered a case against robbers under Section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Arms Act.

He said the victims have not yet disclosed the worth of the stolen items as yet.

The Rao family told the police that their servant who they employed four days ago was also among the thieves and had helped the accused. The DSP said police teams have been formed to track the thieves.
