USING WATER AS WEAPON

-

Indian government’s decision to stop flow of water from Eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) into Pakistan is a welcome step. However, more than a punitive action, as claimed by the government, the decision will help India in fully utilising the water share over which we have exclusive rights. Pakistan, as such, is not going to have any impact, since they already have a network of link canals from Chenab (western river) to rivers Ravi and Sutlej. Nonetheless, the Govt will do well if it hastens up the ongoing projects on our Eastern rivers and stop flow of water into Pakistan. The government needs to reassess its options and hit where it hurts the most.
