ROHTAK: The police investigation into the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 20-year-old Sonepat girl has so far confirmed the involvement of only two men, who were arrested by the police on Saturday.

The victim’s mother had in a supplementary statement named six more men as accused in the case, for which the police had formed a special investigation team (SIT) for probe.

“We have made the six other accused join investigation with the police. But till now, we have not found any proof against them in the case,” Sonepat SP Ashwin Shenvi said, adding, “We will, however, not give them a clean chit till we are completely done with the investigation.”

Meanwhile, the two accused—Sumit and Vikas— who were arrested earlier were on Monday produced in a local court, which sent them to seven more days in police remand. Police said the two are being interrogated.

The gang-rape and murder had shocked the entire country after gory details had emerged in the post-mortem about the victim’s decomposed body, which was found from a secluded plot in Rohtak’s industrial area when stray dogs were feeding on it.

The forensic experts said the skull of the victim was shattered, and there were injuries in the private parts as well. The prime accused Sumit, who committed the crime in anger after the victim refused his marriage proposal, confessed before police that he had smashed bricks and stones on her head to kill her.

We have made the six other accused join investigation with the police. No proof has been found against them yet but we will not give them a clean chit yet. ASHWIN SHENVI, Sonepat SP
